Human screening vs. AI screening: why we chose the harder path

AI screening is fast and cheap. It is also wrong in ways that matter. We built our screening product around real Bridgebees screeners using structured criteria and we want to explain exactly why.

Every recruiting technology company right now is building AI screening. The pitch is consistent: faster, cheaper, unbiased, scalable. We evaluated this approach seriously and decided not to build it. Here is why.

What AI screening actually does well

AI screening tools are genuinely good at pattern matching at scale. If you have five hundred applicants and you want to quickly identify the fifty who have the right keywords, the right tenure, and the right credentials, AI can do that faster and more consistently than a human.

For high-volume, criteria-clear roles; entry-level customer service, standardised technical positions, roles with specific certification requirements... AI screening saves real time.

Where it breaks down

The problem is that most of the roles internal TA teams struggle to fill are not keyword-matching problems. They are judgment problems. Does this person have the right disposition for this team? Will they be motivated by what this company is actually doing? Do their answers to open questions reflect the kind of thinking the hiring manager needs?

AI tools assess what is easy to measure. Communication style, values alignment, motivational fit, cultural compatibility - these require a conversation. They require a trained human paying attention. No AI tool on the market does this reliably, regardless of what the sales deck says.

The bias problem is real but different to what people think

AI screening is often marketed as less biased than humans. This is partially true and mostly misleading. AI tools are trained on historical data, which reflects historical hiring decisions, which reflect historical biases. An AI trained on who got hired in the past will reproduce the patterns of who got hired in the past, including the problematic ones.

Human bias exists too, but it is visible, challengeable, and trainable. A screener who is making biased assessments can be identified and retrained. An AI model that has encoded bias into its weights is significantly harder to correct.

Why we built human screening instead

Bridgebees screenings are conducted by trained human screeners using a structured scorecard and-or one provided by an employer. The scorecard creates consistency, every candidate is assessed on the same criteria in the same way. The human creates quality... a real conversation that surfaces things a resume never could.

It is slower and more expensive than AI screening. We charge 150 credits per screening, and we only charge if the screener actually reaches the candidate. If they cannot make contact after genuine effort, you pay nothing.

We think this is the right tradeoff. Speed and scale matter. But not at the cost of assessments that are unreliable in exactly the situations where getting it right matters most.
