Design Project Manager

Our client is immediately seeking a Design Project Manager to join their team in Apex, NC. This is a hands-on, client-facing role within a design-build environment and is ideal for someone who can manage multiple active projects while remaining closely involved in the design process. The successful candidate will serve as a senior resource within the department, helping guide projects from early concept through construction while providing leadership and mentorship to designers and drafters.

MUST HAVE:

• True project management experience with the ability to manage multiple active projects at once
• Experience overseeing approximately 7–8 projects at varying stages of design, permitting, revisions, or construction
• Strong architectural or design background with the ability to understand and contribute to schematics, concepts, sketches, and overall design direction
• Strong client-facing communication skills with the ability to lead meetings, understand client needs, present ideas, and manage expectations
• Experience managing project timelines, deadlines, deliverables, and internal workflow
• Ability to remain hands-on in the design process rather than purely delegating work
• Experience providing direction, mentorship, and project guidance to designers and drafters
• Ability to serve as a senior resource within a design department and help keep projects progressing
• Strong ownership mentality with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
• Experience with architectural or design software such as Revit, SketchUp, or similar platforms

NICE TO HAVE:

• Experience within architecture, design-build, residential development, community or amenity design, or a related environment
• Previous formal people-management experience
• Strong leadership qualities with experience mentoring or overseeing project work
• Experience coordinating with engineers, construction teams, consultants, or other technical partners
• Experience with community clubhouses, amenity centers, residential or community developments, pools, splash-pad areas, fitness spaces, or similar projects
• Architectural license
• Experience working within a company that handles both design and construction internally
• DInterest and ability to grow into a Director or broader department leadership position over time

DAY TO DAY:

The Design Project Manager will manage projects moving through the design department from early concept and schematic development through construction documentation, permitting, coordination, and eventual construction. This person will be heavily involved with clients, helping understand project goals, presenting ideas, developing concepts, managing expectations, and ensuring projects continue progressing on schedule.

The role will work closely with internal designers and drafters, providing project direction, answering design-related questions, reviewing work, and helping ensure deadlines and deliverables are met. While this person will provide leadership within the department, the role is focused more heavily on project leadership and mentorship than traditional employee management, discipline, or performance management.

The Design Project Manager will remain hands-on throughout the design process and may contribute to schematics, sketching, concept development, and design reviews. Other team members will support construction-document production, so this individual will not be expected to personally produce every drawing set.

This person will typically oversee approximately 7–8 active projects at one time, with projects often operating at different stages and on longer timelines. Strong organization, prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple moving pieces will be critical.

The role will also have significant client interaction and will coordinate closely with internal construction teams, engineers, and other technical partners. Because the company handles both design and construction, this person will have the opportunity to remain involved throughout the full project lifecycle, from initial concept through the completed build.

This is currently a manager-level position with meaningful growth potential. A strong performer who demonstrates leadership beyond project execution may have the opportunity to grow into a Director or broader department leadership role over time.
